Alan Quasha and
Restructuring Businesses
Alan Quasha’s First Venture Into
the World of Restructuring
Alan Quasha first got involved with restructuring
businesses 30 years ago, in 1979, at the age of 29.
Through a joint program of Harvard Law School and
Harvard Business School Quasha was able to pursue and
obtain his M.B.A. and law degree simultaneously. After
graduating, he began to practice law and enjoyed the
firm he was with. But due to his proactive personality and
an entrepreneurial urge, Quasha began his own law firm.
At this point Alan Quasha accomplished one of the first
leveraged buyouts.
He had figured out how to take a company private with
essentially no capital. Then came the hard part: after
the deal you have to make the company work. He began
commuting every week from New York to Ohio, and was
often snowed in at the little motel where he stayed when
he there. Quasha looks back at the experience as
interesting and highly educational, learning a lot about
how to change even very traditional businesses into more
efficient and competitive companies, even under
incredibly difficult circumstances.
