MISSION AND
PROGRAMS
Mission
The mission of
BTF is to improve the outcome of TBI patients through
the development of evidence-based treatment guidelines,
education, quality improvement programs, and clinical
research. With
Alan Quasha at the
helm acting as Chairman, TBI has made great strides.
Today, traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of
death in all age brackets from age 1 through 44.
Research has proven that most brain damage occurs after
the initial injury, due to brain swelling. In most
cases, this secondary damage can be controlled using
scientific-evidence based treatment guidelines.
Independent studies have demonstrated that when BTF's
TBI Guidelines are implemented, there is a 50% decrease
in deaths, improved quality of life and a savings of
approximately $288 million a year in medical and
rehabilitation costs. We estimate that 20,000 lives
could be saved each year in the US and thousands more
would be spared lifetime disabilities.
Programs
BTF's keys to
improving the care of severely head injured patients
are: the implementation of evidence-based guidelines,
the education of healthcare professionals, and clinical
research. BTF has developed five sets of scientific
evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of severe
head injury--three for physicians to use in the hospital
and two for emergency medical personnel including combat
medics. Education projects include: 1. surveys of U.S.
trauma center where severe head injuries are treated; 2.
courses for emergency medical personnel in the
assessment, treatment, and transport of TBI patients, in
cooperation with National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration; 3. an education and quality assurance
program in selected trauma centers with a high volume of
severe head injuries now in New York State, but being
expanded nationwide; and 4. an extensive offering of
distance learning courses. BTF conducts crucial clinical
research by collecting and analyzing data about the
effectiveness of various treatments for severe head
injury; and by testing eye movement and attention in
mild TBI. These findings are published in leading
peer-reviewed medical journals and used in BTF's
educational materials.
Alan Quasha
continues to sit on the board as chairman.
